8401 - Medical-legal essentials for physician leaders: Engaging physicians and managing performance

Course Description

As one of Canada’s largest providers of continuing professional development, the CMPA addresses the educational needs of physicians to help them improve their practices and to provide safe medical care through the continuum of their careers. They provide practice improvement education for physicians in practice, physicians in training, and physician leaders.

This series of interactive workshops allow physician leaders to develop the attitudes and gain the knowledge and skills required to establish a workplace culture that promotes and prioritizes safe medical care. Physicians in leadership positions, such as senior hospital leaders, department and division leads, academic program directors, coordinators and aspiring leaders should attend these workshops. ALL four workshops are being offered in a full-day accredited event.

Course Outline

What You Will Learn

Workshop 1 - Building reliable systems: The leader’s role

Given a goal of fostering and promoting the safety of medical care, the participant will be able to:

• explain key elements of a framework for improvement
• describe the role of the leader in supporting a learning system and culture of continuous improvement

Workshop 2 - Managing physician performance: The importance of natural justice

Given a disruptive behaviour situation, the participant will be able to:

• explain how principles of natural justice contribute to reliable management
• describe 2 dispute resolution methodologies

Using a mock conflict situation, the participant will be able to:

• demonstrate effective use of interest-based resolution skills

Workshop 3 - Building a culture of accountability

Given a culture of accountability framework the participant will be able to:

• describe the three behaviours that threaten patient safety and appropriate management interventions
• name the elements of accountability at the system and provider levels

Using a case study, the participant will:

• apply an algorithmic approach to the establishment of provider accountability

Workshop 4 - Building reliable systems: Putting learning into practice

Given the material presented during the day, the participant will be able to:

• explain how some of the content can be applied to the work environment
• predict potential barriers to implementing the knowledge into practice
• propose concrete steps to incorporate knowledge into practice and effect system-level impact

Accreditation

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the CMPA for up to 6.0 MOC credits.

This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of family Physicians of Canada for up to 6.0 Mainpro+ credits.

A continental breakfast will be available beginning by 7:45 a.m. and a hot buffet lunch will be served.
